For many people, searching for horse memorial jewellery begins with a precious lock of tail hair kept after saying goodbye to a much-loved horse.

Horse hair can be transformed into beautiful, lasting jewellery — something personal enough to hold the memories of one particular horse, but designed as jewellery you will genuinely want to wear.

At The Burnished Horse, I create horse hair memorial jewellery by hand from your own horse's tail hair, combining traditional braiding, weaving and other specialist hair-working techniques with sterling silver, gold, platinum, diamonds and gemstones.

I prefer to think of these pieces not simply as memorial jewellery, but as modern heirlooms: jewellery that celebrates the horse, the relationship you shared and all the memories that came with it.

Jewellery made from your horse's hair

Depending on the amount, length and colour of hair you have, there are many possibilities.

Your horse's hair can become part of a bracelet, ring, pendant, locket or other piece of jewellery. Hair from more than one horse can also be incorporated into a single piece, either kept visually distinct or combined within a braid, weave or pattern.

If you have only a small amount of precious hair, please don't assume there isn't enough. Some of my techniques use remarkably few hairs, and I am continually developing new ways of incorporating individual strands and small quantities of horse hair into fine jewellery.

A celebration, not simply a memorial

The Burnished Horse has never been only about remembering horses who are gone.

I make jewellery from the hair of horses still very much part of everyday life too — to celebrate partnerships, milestones, achievements and simply the extraordinary relationship between horse and owner.

But when a horse has been lost, jewellery made from their hair can take on an especially personal significance. Rather than defining the piece by loss, I aim to create something that brings the horse back to mind as they were: their character, their story and the place they hold in your life.
